Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP): Coverage, Eligibility, Renewals & Applications
At Metral Dental, our wonderful North Nanaimo dental clinic accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)! We are happy to help patients understand their CDCP benefits and how they apply to treatment at our dental office.
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government program designed to make dental care more affordable for eligible Canadians who do not have access to private dental insurance. The plan helps reduce out-of-pocket dental costs and gives more Canadians access to preventive and restorative dental care.
Who Is Eligible for the CDCP?
To qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
- Have filed your most recent income tax return (and your spouse/common-law partner must also have filed, if applicable)
- Have an adjusted family net income under $90,000
- Not have access to any private dental insurance through an employer, spouse, pension, etc.
It’s important to note that simply choosing not to enroll in available dental benefits does not make you eligible for the CDCP. If coverage is available to you, you generally do not qualify.
Applications are submitted through the Government of Canada.
What Does the CDCP Cover?
The CDCP covers many common dental services, although not all treatments are covered at 100%.
Covered services at our Nanaimo dental clinic may include:
Preventive Services
- Dental examinations
- Dental cleanings (scaling)
- Fluoride treatments
- Polishing
- X-rays
Restorative Services
- Fillings
- Root canal treatment (when eligible)
- Certain tooth restorations
Major Services
- Dentures
- Some oral surgery procedures
- Periodontal (gum) treatments
Additional Services
Certain services may require preauthorization before treatment begins. Our dental clinic can help determine whether approval is required.
Will the CDCP Cover My Entire Dental Bill?
Not necessarily.
The CDCP pays according to its own fee schedule, which may differ from your dentist’s usual fees. Depending on your family income and the treatment provided, you may still have some out-of-pocket costs.
Patients should always ask:
- Is my coverage active?
- Does this office participate in the CDCP?
- Will there be any costs not covered by the plan?
If you’re searching for a Nanaimo dentist who accepts patients covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan, our team at Metral Dental is here to help!
Renewing Your CDCP Coverage
One of the most common misconceptions is that CDCP coverage renews automatically.
It does not.
Current members must renew their coverage every year to confirm they still meet the eligibility requirements. For the 2026–2027 benefit year, renewals were open from April 15 to June 1, 2026. Coverage ends on June 30 if renewal is not completed.
Renewal can be completed online through your Service Canada account or by telephone.
What Happens If I Miss the Renewal Deadline?
If you do not renew before the deadline:
- Your CDCP coverage will end.
- You will need to submit a new application.
- There may be a gap in coverage.
- Dental treatment received during the gap will not be reimbursed retroactively.
Important Reminder Before Your Appointment
Before booking dental treatment at Metral Dental under the CDCP:
- Confirm your coverage is active.
- Bring your member information.
- Verify that your dental provider accepts CDCP patients.
- Ask whether any portion of the treatment may not be covered.
Understanding your benefits ahead of time can help avoid unexpected costs and ensure you receive the care you need.
