Fluoride Supplements

Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that has been scientifically proven to help reduce the risk of cavities.  You probably use fluoride on a daily basis as it is found in most toothpastes and you likely receive it at your regular dental cleaning and check up appointment.  These methods of giving fluoride are topical, where the fluoride is absorbed into the enamel through contact exposure.

Fluoride can also be absorbed systemically through city water, if you live in an where the city water is fluoridated or through fluoride supplements.  Supplements come in the form of drops or tablets and are available over the counter at your local drug store.  The American Dental Association recommends fluoride supplements to children 6 months of age to 16 years of age living in areas where the drinking water is not fluoridated.  Currently drinking water in British Columbia is not fluoridated leaving children's teeth more susceptible to tooth decay, therefore making fluoride supplements a great option to decrease the chances of decay in the future.

The following chart lists the amount of fluoride suggested by the ADA per day based on age.
