It’s true! It’s now possible to straighten your teeth without having to deal with a mouth full of metal brackets and wire. Align Technology has created nearly invisible braces for teens and adults, called Invisalign. Using a series of clear, removable appliances - you can slowly and gently move your teeth into a more perfect smile. Invisalign came onto the the market in 1998, but many people still haven’t heard of this new way of straightening teeth.
Upon visiting your dentist, they will take x-rays, impressions and pictures of your teeth. From there, Invisalign creates a digital 3-D image of your mouth. This will help your dentist create a treatment plan and map out the exact movements of your teeth. Once this is completed, you can see a virtual representation of how your teeth will move over the course of your treatment.
Based on this treatment plan, a series of custom-made, clear aligners are made. These are smooth, clear plastic aligners that fit comfortably in the mouth. Unlike traditional metal braces, these aligners won’t cut your mouth or irritate your cheeks and gums. These aligners are meant to be worn all the times, except when eating, brushing, and flossing your teeth. Every two weeks, you get new aligners that gently move your teeth into the desired position. They are so subtle, most people won’t even notice you have braces!
Approximately every two weeks you will get a new set of aligners to advance your treatment. Checkups with your dentist are required regularly to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments. For adults, the treatment time is approximately one full year. For teens, treatment time is comparable to traditional braces. For best results you need to wear your aligners for 20 - 22 hours a day for your entire treatment.
