Flossing... Does it even matter?

Flossing... Does it even matter?

We’ve all seen the flossing article released by the Associated Press stating "Medical benefits of dental floss unproven." Finally, an excuse to toss the floss and not feel guilty......or is it?

Analysis

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, the sample size used for this study was too small and the time allocated to the study was too short. Both factors create for a very biased study as it does not examine gum health over a significant amount of time.
As dental professionals, we see firsthand the benefit that flossing daily has on the oral cavity. Using an interdental cleaner prevents plaque buildup between the teeth, which in turn prevents dental cavities, root canals and or extractions of teeth!

Benefits of Flossing

Flossing is like building a house and not painting two sides of it, ultimately those two sides are going to rot away quicker. To maintain good oral health, the American Dental Association recommends brushing for two minutes, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth once a day with an interdental cleaner and regular dental visits advised by your dentist.
